September 2023 FQS Member Meeting

The next monthly Family Quest Society meeting will be held virtually on September 23 from 11am to 1pm EDT. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Evelyn McDowell, whose presentation topic will be “Joining A Lineage Society To Commemorate Enslaved and Freed Ancestors: Sons & Daughters of the United States Middle Passage. “

Dr. Evelyn Aniton McDowell, Ph.D., currently serves as founder and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Sons & Daughters of the United States Middle Passage (SDUSMP), a heritage society for descendants of Africans who were enslaved in colonial America and the United States of America (www.sdusmp.org). She is also a member of the Princeton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Dr. McDowell is an Associate Professor of Accountancy at Rider University and co-chair of the Rider’s History of Slavery Taskforce. She is a genealogist and spends many hours honing her skills, including attending the 2023 Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy Institute—African American Genealogy Methods and Strategies--a weeklong delve into African-American genealogy. She has been researching her own family tree for over 25 years and has helped many others do the same. To date, she has found 37 enslaved people in her family tree. She is a public speaker and outspoken advocate for the inclusion of African Americans throughout all pages of American history. She is a published author who writes about using lineage as a basis for reparative justice for slavery and the history of slavery in New Jersey.
